Here's some recent drawing/paintings inspired by the Merri Creek in Melbourne. They are investigations into form and colour.
In each work, I used different combinations of materials and techniques. As well as, different levels of abstraction. To discover which combination would give me the essential qualities of this landscape. It's subtle and I've done many more but I chose some of the more finished ones for this post. Of course this exploratory process can be endless, so at some point I've got to stop. One of my main attractions to the tiny Merri Creek is the way it cuts through the landscape. Meandering through flat grasslands to medium sized stony, sometimes grassy hills. And into the Yarra River. All along it are unique shrubs and eucalyptus trees, which cover and hide the hills and creek. Flattening the whole environment into a mesh of interlocking shapes. The drawings/paintings are in watercolour and gouache, with one charcoal drawing.

Sometimes while clip-clopping through the medieval buildings and cobblestone streets of Old Town Stockholm, I think how amazing. Just a suburban girl from Melbourne. Here. . When I first arrived, I used to take photos, like a whirling dervish, because I'd never seen these type of buildings and streets. And landscapes. And they were your usual travel snapshots. But now, after 9 years of photography, creating a mood is more important. And I alter the picture accordingly. But with that initial amazement... hopefully... embedded in the image. |
