Recently I was in Melbourne for a couple of months and we managed to visit a couple of stunningly beautiful towns by the seaside. Namely Lorne and Phillip Island. Yes the Phillip Island where the little penguins come in to sleep every night amongst the sand dunes, cheered on by hundreds of crazy humans. How can they stand it? I don't know. But this watercolour, though it doesn't feature penguins, is inspired by those visits to the beaches around Melbourne.

Sometimes you see things and you know you're going to draw or paint it at some stage but you don't know when. This oak tree in winter watercolour I did a few weeks ago but saw a couple of years ago.
It is based on a tree I encountered getting off the bus in Stockholm on the way to the botanical gardens. I have no idea how long it's been there by the side of a busy highway but I thought it was magnificent. Protecting and nurturing everybody as they get off the bus. It's actually huge- maybe 150 feet. The colour shifts and turns symbolising the life of the tree. When we're talking about trees we're always talking about a distinct personality don't you think? |
