Testing Times I've spent a lot of time testing watercolours on different types of paper, over the last couple of years. For example in the abstract sea watercolour below, I'm using rough cold press paper. Which, if you use it in combination with granulating watercolours, the little granules of watercolour will sit in the pockets of the paper giving it a very granular, rough look. Even though it's meant to be water, I wanted the blue water to have this granulating effect, like sand and the earth is embedded in it. I tried many different types of paper but finally decided on this rough Arches paper which to me expresses more evocatively what I wanted to say. Memories Powerful memories of past experiences of the sand, surf, joy and emotional times with friends, which are layered in your heart.

At the moment I'm inspired by the garden outside. So many beautiful flowers in Stockholm. And they're growing wild everywhere.
Tulips on nature strips. Huge bushes of violets on street corners. Beautiful blossoms on apple trees. And the green, green grass. So, of course, I've started doing plein air small watercolours again in the forest and around it. They're painted within about half an hour. Just when I'm having lunch or a cup of tea. So they're basically just getting the main forms and feeling down. Here's a couple below. They're only tiny. 7.5 x 16cm. |
